Elderberry Pie
My youngest daughter wanted to make “Property Pie.” That is, a pie containing all the different fruit that grows wild on our property and in our woods; this includes wild raspberries, apples, wild strawberries, and elderberries. Obviously getting all of these ripe at the same time is impossible, but making pie out of any particular [...]

The Internet is the wild west of intellectual discussion, and usually I’d tell you to avoid the comments like the plague. However, sometimes the Internet gets it right. Tonight is that night. Read this “recipe,” and in particular the comments:

Thank-you Internet. Thank-you Food Network, never change, OK?
I’m re-filing this under LOLWTFBBQ.

Fruit
Our weekend was punctuated with experiences related to fruit. It began with the most enjoyable visit to our local farmer’s market I’ve had, since we were all four able to ride the 10Km on bicycle. Tricycles, training wheels, and now rails to trails–the girls are at an amazing stage.
When we got to the market we [...]

Flatbreads
On the weekends I try to devote myself to as much time in the kitchen as I can, and to focus on attempting something I haven’t tried before. This past weekend, for reasons I’m not clear on myself, I was interested in flatbread. I wanted to share a number of observations I made:
As with all [...]

Brown Eggs
Over the holidays (they’re not done yet for me) I’ve traded in my computer for my kitchen. Apologies to those of you who live on a stable diet of what I write here–I’ve been feeding others. Cooking as much as I have, I’ve had to restock many ingredients in our pantry and fridge, including dozens [...]

Salt
For lunch today I had pizza from on campus, and the crust was made with almost no salt. It’s a common mistake I’ve made baking bread over the years. I remember the first time I learned what salt does in bread. I made this incredible Italian artisanal loaf that took many days. When it was [...]

The Sacred
The wine is not sacred. It merely colours. The bread is not sacred. It will leave as we leave. Rather, the bread and wine create the possibility of a gathering around the table. The moment spent around the table together, this is sacred.

“For all the details, please visit our website”
I’ve written before about my frustration with big media using the web as a supplemental mechanism for reusing content first delivered in a traditional format. When the web is viewed as a table of contents or handout to your main presentation, you miss the entire point of what the web is all about. Today I’m [...]

Care
Luke has an interesting post up today–Thinking through the Mundane Task. It’s caused me to focus for a good chunk of this evening on what it means to care for something. Here’s part of what he says:
I love cutting the herbs and digging the garlic. I love stripping the leaves from the plants. I love [...]
