Vocamus Writers Community and the Guelph Public Library are partnering again this year to offer free online writing workshops at 2:00 PM every Sunday afternoon in February.
On Sunday, February 13 join us for a workshop on Writing the Short Story: How to Begin.
Analyze classic and contemporary short stories with author Deepa Rajagopalan. Emulate the techniques examined to begin creating a short story.
In this workshop, we will take a close look at a few classic and contemporary short stories to analyze the opening paragraph, structural unity, dialogue, time, and the closing paragraph. Using a short writing prompt, you will write an opening paragraph of your story by emulating techniques that we examined. We will talk briefly about editing, and submitting to literary magazines/contests.
Deepa Rajagopalan won the 2021 RBC/PEN Canada New Voices Award for her short story, “Peacocks of Instagram.” She is completing her MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Guelph in Canada, and is a graduate of the Creative Writing program from the University of Toronto. She is an editor of Held magazine, and co-host and curator of the Emerging Writers Reading Series in Toronto. She is working on her first book, a collection of short fiction. She has worked in Technology at Deloitte and Accenture. She has lived in Saudi Arabia, India, and the United States, before moving to Canada. She currently lives in Guelph.
