BARBARA HEAGY is a retired teacher and present day writer, photographer, and traveler. Since the age of seventeen, she has been filling empty journals and notebooks with her thoughts, musings and life experiences while writing plays, poetry, essays and stories that reflect life issues.
Barbara's most recently published book "For the Love of Food: Family Edition" (December 2024, One Thousand Trees) is a collection of poetry, prose, stories, and recipes praising food as a language of love through five generations of the author’s family. This memoir/cookbook is a testament to the life-giving power of food as it moves from field to table with gratitude, bonding, and celebration.
Her first published book, an inspirational memoir/cancer journey/love story, 10 – A Story of Love, Life, and Loss (December 2015, Balboa Press), was written after the untimely death of her beloved husband Tom.
Barbara contributed to the anthology You Are Not Alone - 52 Stories of Hope (October, 2016, One Thousand Trees). Under the guidance of the publisher Lisa Browning, this book was written as a fundraiser for Hospice Wellington, Guelph, Ontario, with 100% of all profits going directly to the organization. Barbara was honoured to be a part of this fund-raiser as Hospice Wellington was where Tom, her husband, spent his last days. This book is available directly from Hospice Wellington and the publisher, One Thousand Trees.
Barbara continued to write and publish. Good Grief People (March 2017, Angel Hope Publishing) was co-authored with five other authors: Glynis M. Belec, Donna Mann, Carolyn Wilker, Ruth Smith Meyer, and Alan Anderson. This is a book of true grief stories recognizing and respecting the individuality of grief and the reality of hope. It is presently available online, in local retail outlets and book stores or directly from the authors. Good Grief People is a finalist in Word Awards 2018, The Word Guild, for the best of Christian literature in Canada.
Barbara was honoured to be a part of the Canada 150 Legacy Project, Grey With A Silver Lining (November 2017, Grey Highlands Municipality). This anthology contains 480 pages of heartwarming tributes to Grey Highlands’ people, places and things that have inspired, uplifted, and encouraged over the years. Her poems and essays have been published in local, provincial, and national newsletters, magazines and collections which include The National Library of Poetry, Dreamers Creative Writing and FWTAO (Federation of Women Teachers) Newsletter. Her plays have been performed on public stages, including Theatre Orangeville, in Orangeville, Ontario.
