Here's the May 2024 Vocamus Writers Community Newsletter.

  • We have new space! Local literary publisher Gordon Hill Press is donating space for Vocamus Writers Community to use for meetings and workshops and so forth. It's at 255 Woolwich Street, in the side addition to First Baptist Church. We're not quite ready to hold events there (give us a minute!), but if you'd like to use that space in the future, be in touch at vocamuswriterscommunity@gmail.com to make those arrangements.

  • Hold the date! Book Bash 2024 is officially booked for Sunday November 3, so put it in your calendar now.

  • The VWC Creative Non-Fiction Group invites you to a weekly online drop in session, Thursday nights at 7:00 PM. Email martina.freitag@gmail.com for the link.

  • Local author Kira Vermond is running her 23-Minute Writers’ Club online on Fridays at 4:00 PM for 45 minutes. It's free! email kira@vermond.ca for the link.

  • Publication Studio Guelph launches three new books by emerging Inuit writers — KINAUVUNGA by Aedan Corey, Cautionary Tales by J. Grey, and Hold Steady My Vision by Emily Laurent Henderson — on Saturday May 4, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at The River Run Centre.

  • Guelph author Greg Rhyno is launching his new novel, Who by Fire, on Saturday May 4, 8:00 PM, at the ArtBar, with guest readings by Deepa Rajagopalan and Leanne Toshiko Simpson.

  • The VWC Genre Fiction Group will meet in-person on Sunday May 5 at 2:00 PM, discussing researching for fiction. Email vocamusgenregroup@gmail.com for the location.

  • Gordon Hill Press holds its online Spring 2024 launch party on Sunday May 5, 3:00 PM EST – https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/gordon-hill-press-spring-2024-online-launch-tickets-881035068607.

  • The Guelph Guild of Storytellers is at the Guelph Civic Museum on Thursday May 9 at 7:00 PM. Local tellers and invited guests will tell stories, followed by a short open mic.

  • Gordon Hill Press holds its Spring 2024 launch party at the artBar in Guelph on Friday May 10, 7:00 PM EST, featuring reading by AJ Dolman, Concetta Principe, and Jean Marc Ah-Sen – https://vocamus.net/community/events/2024/05/gordon-hill-press-spring-2024-guelph-launch.

  • The VWC Second Saturday writers' hang-out is on May 11, 7:00 PM at Atmosphere Cafe on Carden Street. It's a casual and unstructured chance to meet with other writers, have a drink, and chat about what you're reading and writing. All are welcome.

  • Eramosa Eden is holding a writers' retreat from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday May 19 at 178 Indian Trail, Township Of Guelph/Eramosa. The fee is $25. Email glorianye@gmail.com.

  • The VWC Poetry Group meets online on Saturday May 25, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, an informal group for poets at various points in their careers. Email vocamuswriterscommunity@gmail.com for the link.

  • The Bookshelf presents a reading by Erin Zimmerman on Saturday May 25, 2:00 PM, in the Bookstore. Erin will reading from and discussing her book Unrooted: Botany, Motherhood and the Fight to Save an Old Science. Admission is free.

  • Join us in person for our VWC Last Sunday Writers' Hang-Out for an informal chance to meet and chat with other authors at the downtown Red Brick on Sunday May 26, at 1:00 PM. All are welcome. See you there!

  • Guelph publisher One Thousand Trees releases new book of inspirational horse stories.

  • Local author Ed Butts releases Guelph Stories, a collection of articles about Guelph and people associated with Guelph. You can get your copy from The Bookshelf or order a copy directly from the author at edpbutts@yahoo.com.
