Introduction to Creative Writing

- Learn fundamental vocabulary, workshop practices, and basic writing skills that you can apply to any genre. Explore choices of point of view in fiction, basic requirements of narrative scene, dialogue, narrative structure in fiction and nonfiction, techniques of lively writing, metaphoric language and poetic forms. Techniques for generating material and finding a voice, along with some practical information about publishing and the writing life are also covered.

Writing Poetry

- But what exactly makes a poem a poem? You will explore this question while attending an eight-week poetry workshop, probing the various elements of this genre: rhythm, cadence, stanzaic structure, metre, image, and metaphoric language. You will attempt a variety of poetic forms such as the sonnet, ghazal, pantoum and read examples of published work. Over the course of eight weeks, you will create, workshop and revise a short portfolio of your own poems.
